Semantic conventions and referential intentions

چکیده

Abstract According to intentionalism, the semantic reference of uses demonstratives is fixed, at least partly, by speaker’s referential intention. In this paper, I argue against possibility existence a convention sort. My argument placed in Lewisian framework signaling games and consists several steps that correspond four anti-intentionalist arguments, already present literature, have proven inconclusive when employed separately without being set mentioned framework.

Self-referential behaviour, overreaction and conventions in financial markets

We study a generic model for self-referential behaviour in financial markets, where agents attempt to use some (possibly fictitious) causal correlations between a certain quantitative information and the price itself. This correlation is estimated using the past history itself, and is used by a fraction of agents to devise active trading strategies. The impact of these strategies on the price m...

MetaLex Naming Conventions and the Semantic Web

MetaLex XML is an interchange format, a lowest common denominator for other standards, intended not to replace jurisdiction-specific standards and vendor-specific formats in the publications process but to impose a standardized view on legal documents for the purposes of information exchange and interoperability in the context of software development. To meet these requirements, MetaLex defines...

Semantic Intentions and Linguistic Structure

Either claim alone would be of interest; the first would provide an important set of generalizations that would constrain any future semantico-psychological investigation, the second would establish psychology's independence from semantics. Toddlers use speech disfluencies to predict speakers' referential intentions.

The ability to infer the referential intentions of speakers is a crucial part of learning a language. Previous research has uncovered various contextual and social cues that children may use to do this. Here we provide the first evidence that children also use speech disfluencies to infer speaker intention. Disfluencies (e.g. filled pauses 'uh' and 'um') occur in predictable locations, such as ...

Pragmatics, Semantic Underdetermination and the Referential/Attributive Distinction

It has long been recognised that there are referential uses of definite descriptions. It is not as widely recognised that there are attributive uses of indexicals and other such paradigmatically singular terms. I offer an account of the referential/attributive distinction which is intended to give a unified treatment of both sorts of cases. I argue that the best way to account for the referenti...
